Sync Your Phone with Zyb

Zyb_2 Zyb is a new service that allows you to sync your mobile phone contacts and calendar without wires for FREE!  This is great news, and I encourage you to check their phone compatibility list before purchasing your next handset.

You can use ZYB with almost any mobile from Nokia, SonyEricsson, Siemens and Motorola, as well as some of the newer models from Samsung, LG and others.  Sync is done over-the-air via a connection over the mobile phone network.

Verizoncharge_1And to think those creeps at Verizon want to charge you $2 per month for the same service.  For shame Verizon, for shame!

Our Favorite YouTube Guitarist Revealed

Guitarhero

This is another “you saw it here” post.  The NY Times has posted an article on what has become one of the five most viewed videos on YouTube with over nine million hits so far.  The Times reveals our guitarist as Jeong-Hyun Lim, a 23-year-old  from Korea.

The Thinking Person's YouTube

Wrenchhowto If you read this blog, then you know that I'm a big YouTube fan.  Google is now competing with a site that has much better performance.

My favorite video site is soon to be VideoJug once they get more content up.  I realize that the name implies an entirely different type of site, but these folks are putting together a library of thousands of how-to videos.  Some are produced in-house and others will be uploaded by members.

All content is approved before it is posted, so VideoJug should turn into a very high-quality site.

31 Ways to Lace Shoes

LacesIan's Shoelace Site illustrates 31 different ways to lace your shoes.  The author points out that while mathematically there are there are over two trillion possibilities, these 31 are his favorite.

Second Wind Tracks

I have finally gotten around to ripping and posting some tracks I've recorded over the years.  This music was recorded in 1994 by a bluegrasss band from New Hampshire named "Second Wind".  (Not to be confused with the group from PA.)

We recorded it in my friend Larry's studio (East Coast Digital - which I helped design) in Tyngsboro, MA with a Neumann U87 and a few Beyerdynamic microphones with a Mackie 8-bus console, 16-Bit ADAT's and Genelec 1031a monitors.

We mixed it down and did some editing and mastering on ProTools.

If you would like to download any of the mp3 files, click on the Playbutton button to the right of the track name.

Add Streaming Video to TypePad Blog with Stickam

FullstickinterfaceStickam™ allows you to easily place streaming video on your blog and/or web site.  The video is uploaded via the Flash browser plug-in and displays as a flash movie - NICE!

However, if you copy and paste the Stickam code as the site suggests, you’ll get a very busy full-sized 160 x 400 interface on your blog that takes up a lot of real estate.  (See the image to the left.)

If you are not planning on using the chat features, and simply want a streaming web-cam, then you can mask the display using HTML and have a nice streaming video window on your web site or blog.  Here’s how to do it:

Internet Guitar Hero

If you read this blog, you already know that I'm a big fan of YouTube.  This video of a kid in his bedroom shredding Pachelbel's Canon is what I think the Internet is all about...

Nomar is Back

Lanom_1You’ll notice that I don’t have a sports category on this blog.  While I’m a Red Sox fan and Nomar Garciaparra fan,  there are enough sports pages on the web right now, and we certainly don’t need another one.  (Remember Nomar.net?)

However, I have to post an “I told you so” about my boy.  At the all-star break, he’s leading the NL in batting (.359 ), on a pace to hit 100+ RBI’s and only has one error at first base in 66 games with 59 double-plays.  Nomar also is going to his sixth all-star game this year.

Nomar is back.  Stay tuned!

Goodbye to a Legend

Stephenstcroix

My world got a little smaller this morning when I read about the passing of esteemed sound engineer and author Stephen St. Croix.  Born Steven Curtis Marshall, he took his pen-name because of his love for the Caribbean island.

Few outside of the industry knew him, but Stephen had an extraordinary impact on so many through the technologies that he developed.  Technologies that helped create Darth Vader’s voice, extract dialog from the Nixon tapes and provided crisp audio to the re-mastered release of Gone with the Wind.  The Washington Post has a good write-up.

Stephen’s impact on me and his other faithful readers was more personal  however.  He started writing a column (The Fast Lane) for Mix magazine in 1988.  I began reading him a few years later and have been looking for his three pages of wisdom about technology and life each month ever since.

In 2001, he was diagnosed with terminal melanoma, and wrote a column to say goodbye to his readers. I’ll quote from the opening paragraph:  “You, my readers have been my extended family for decades.  In fact, I have never actually written a column, I have simply been writing personal letters to you since the beginning.”

Although I corresponded with Stephen by email only once about bit-resolution a few years back, I - like most of his readers - really felt that same connection.

Stephen - you will be missed terribly.  Thank you for sharing.

Playing MP3's off of DVD-R

Lg_lda511_dvdAlthough I am admittedly a bit of a gadget geek, I think the web needs another gadget review blog like it needs another directory of real estate agents...  However, when a gadget with the right features is particularly hard to find, I will shout about it.

The result of my month-long quest to find a DVD player that will play shuffled MP3’s off of a DVD-R has resulted in the LG LDA-511.
